5 air checks before you hire a balance firm
Do these five in order. A balancer who starts at the filter while the ceiling is raining on product is measuring the wrong failure.
| Check | Document | Instrument |
|---|---|---|
| Ceiling during wash | 9 CFR 416.2(d) or PMO Item 4p | Your eyes, then a surface temp if you want one |
| Hood alone | IMC 508.1 where that code is adopted | Room pressure |
| Dock curtain | Will County construction guide, if it applies | Anemometer at 3 feet |
| Housing | Your SOP. Not a village form we could find | Photometer |
| Drain heat | Ordinance 896 or MWRD limits | Thermometer at the right point |
Look up while the room is in the failed state
Directive 5000.1 and PMO Item 4p both start with condensation you can see. If drip can hit product, you already have a finding. A traverse after you shut the wash down will hide it.
Start the hood alone
IMC 508.1, which Aurora adopted, wants makeup air to start with the exhaust. If the pack room sags, the interlock or the makeup unit is the job. Filters will not fix suction.
Read the doorway with the dock in its real position
Will County printed 750 feet per minute at 3 feet for certain curtains. It did not print a pascal. Measure both if you have a cold room, and label which number came from a document.
Scan the seal, not the average face
Bypass lives at the gel seal and the knife edge. A certificate that says the media is 99.97 percent does not prove the housing is tight. Elk Grove does not file this test for you.
Put a thermometer on the drain if a district owns the sewer
Elgin’s district caps heat at the treatment plant at 104°F. MWRD caps the sewer entrance at 150°F. The wrong thermometer sends you to the wrong note.
How we ranked them
Ranked by how often the failure shows up before anyone opens a housing. The first check is the one an inspector can see without an instrument. Later checks need a meter. We did not rank brands.
Questions
Only if the failure you can name is a seal leak. A wet ceiling, a negative pack room, and a hot drain are different jobs. Buying the housing scan first is how the report comes back clean while the inspector still writes the drip.
No. They tell you whether the job is the one this desk takes. The form on the check page still refuses a house, a restaurant hood, and the cities we do not cover.
